The Washington State Legislature passes SCR 8406 to reestablish the Joint Select Committee on Civic Health

The Project for Civic Health commends the State Legislature for stepping up and tackling the issue at hand – how we can improve our public discourse and the connections we have with our friends, family, and neighbors.

Through Senate Concurrent Resolution 8406, the Joint Select Committee on Civic Health has been reauthorized. The committee will expand its membership from 13 to 17 members, consisting of the Lieutenant Governor, four members of the majority party and four members of the minority party of the Senate and the House of Representatives. This expansion is a direct result of more legislators requesting to take part in this effort to improve the state of our civic health.

“I’m grateful that the legislature passed SCR 8406 to extend the Joint Select Committee on Civic Health,” said Lt. Governor Heck in his 2026 Sine Die statement. “Now more than ever, our work to promote respectful discourse in the public square is needed. I appreciate the members of both political parties of both chambers who have participated thus far, and I’m excited this bill will allow for participation of more members.”

The committee will issue a report on its work to the Legislature prior to the 2027, 2028, and 2029 regular session, and set to expire at the start of the 2029 regular session.
